Designing with 2023 Pantone Color – Viva Magenta

It seems crazy 2023 is already here. The global shutdown of Covid-19 is still vivid in our minds, yet transformation is occurring throughout our lives. We are getting comfortable with a new normal and making sure we put our best foot forward. There is a new sense of empowerment as if we can do anything. The 2023 Pantone Color of the Year is the epitome of that feeling. Viva Magenta 18-1750 “is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

Viva Magenta is the perfect balance between warm and cool. To many color officials, it is a hybrid, straddling nature and technology, organic and innovation, and the physical and virtual. The deep crimson color is set to narrate so much of the design world and embodies what the upcoming year will bring.

It is hard to imagine such a bold color in the interior design realm after years of neutrality and the need to feel “clean.” But as the world adjusts to living through Covid, we have a heightened awareness of the outside world beyond technology. Magenta breaks this static emblem we once knew and creates the desperately desired splash of color. Because of Magenta’s “organic origins which it traces to the cochineal, the source of red carmine dye, there is a psychological, emotional component.” Pantone says “magenta balances bold and fun with confidence and humanity. It likens that to how digital spaces have accelerated globalization, allowing people to connect with others and deepen their empathy.”
